The Kootenay Lake BC Family Day Fishing Derby Resounding Success –
KOOTENAY LAKE, BC (February 11, 2013) – The First Annual Kootenay Lake BC Family Day Fishing Derby hosted by Canadian Training Resources has wrapped up, prizes have been awarded, and a lot of fun was had by all participants and organizers. This derby was a tremendous success say derby officials, far surpassing even their own high expectations.
“We had a great turnout, the weather was beautiful, and the response from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. We’d like to thank everyone for their support and their fair play. We’re really looking forward to doing this again next year and we’ll be giving away $10,000 for the first prize so you’d better book early! Hundreds of people have already pre-booked for 2014 and we expect to be sold out within a few days,” says Robert DiPietro, derby organizer.
A last minute decision to award $200 to the first fish measured in each category above 28” was enthusiastically welcomed. “Not only did it get the derby going on the first day but it really helped encourage catch and release, which was very important for a derby of this size.” Three daily random ticket draws for $100 were also very popular.
The first place prize of $5,000 for Rainbow Trout was won by Jordan Higgins of Trail, BC, second place prize of $1,000 was won by Peter Payne of Fruitvale, BC, and the third place $500 prize was won by Gary Gage of Bonners Ferry, Idaho. For Dolly Varden Bill Miller from Creston, BC placed first, winning $2,000, Brad Werner of Kaslo, BC was in second place for $1,000 and Tim McMullin from Salmon Arm, BC took the third place prize of $500. November 2010 - Classic 5 of Diamonds
A mid-afternoon fishing excursion to our favourite bays around Nelson, BC produced some good battles with small fiesty Rainbow Trout. Our top lures today were classic spoons like the yellow and red five of diamonds, a silver and blue spoon, and fly fishing with a Janssen Minnow. We had most success when retrieving the lure at a shallow depth.
August 16, 2010 - Oh, the fish! Spin casting little spinners out of the Kootenay Angler boat into bays near Nelson, BC was the ticket today. Little black and chrome Bang Tails and Rainbow Trout pattern spinners were working for Rainbow Trout, Kokannee, and the dreaded Northern Pikeminnow. Also, there were numerous Bald Eagles and Osprey overhead looking for treats from us. An amazing day fishing in sunny 30 degree Celsius weather.
August 2010 - Fly fishing near Nelson BC is hot! A quick stop on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake near Nelson, BC yielded Rainbow Trout, Kokanee, and a Northern Pikeminnow while fly fishing. All fish were caught 2-5 feet down in clear water on a wasp-like wet fly. Exciting flashes of silver! Also, towards Salmo, BC, a Doc Spratley attractor wet fly has been working in the Salmo River and Cottonwood Lake area for little hungry trout. Find pools. Catch trout! Nothing but fun. Watch out for bears.
